Moving Pre-Teens

Younger school-age children can be helped through support and space to explore and adjust to feelings. As much as possible, let your child be involved—or at least feel involvement—in the move.

  • Ask the child to be in charge of helping a pet or stuffed animal make the move safely.
  • Give the child a disposable camera (under $10) that can be used for taking pictures of the old home, the trip, and the new home.
  • Talk to school counselors and teachers at your child’s new school. Curricula vary, so find out where your child is in comparison to classmates and arrange for help in any areas where your child is behind. Make sure the school knows of any medical conditions that may need attention during school.
