What can you do to help younger children cope with the move?
Play-act the move. Use dolls, a few boxes, and a toy truck to help children visualize the moving process.
Reassure very young children that they will be moving with you.
Three-year-old Amy watched as her family gave away their dog when they moved to a new home. She feared that since she too was a small member of the family, she might also be given away. It took lots of reassurance from mom, dad, and her big brother that her stay with Aunt Sandra on moving day wasn’t a trick to leave her behind.
If your young child is in day care, find a new day care situation as soon as possible. Young children make friends quickly.
