Some teens are more ready than others to start their own life. If you and your mature teen decide that staying behind is the best solution, set some ground rules. Make sure they’re clearly understood and agreed upon beforehand by you, your teen, and anyone who will be responsible for her.
- Who will pay for what?
- What household chores will she be expected to perform?
- When is curfew?
- Will she go to church or attend other functions?
- How will routine medical needs as well as emergencies be handled?
Write out a contract that everyone signs. Remember, in order to encourage your teen to begin thinking like an adult, treat her like one. After all, she soon will be—ready or not! And the moving decision can help bring you together.
