Take It With You

Even if your move is a short distance, you’ll take a few items in the car or make them readily accessible on the truck. Naturally, the longer the trip to your new home, the more items you will need with you.

Make sure you have keys for your new home, extra car or truck keys, and other stuff you’ll need when you arrive. And if you’re moving to lower Slobovia, make sure you take passports, visas, and other needed documents. Don’t pack them!

You will want to carry your valuable jewelry, stocks, and other items with you. Be sure to take your credit cards, checkbook and cash or travelers’ checks. Also hand-carry any valuables that you’d rather not ship: coin collections, silver, jewelry, crystal, or fine china.

If a moving company is transporting your belongings, make sure you carry all the paperwork on your shipment. And make sure you have some cash, your checkbook(s), and debit/ATM and credit cards. Anyone in your group on medication? Or should be? Gather all prescribed medications and their prescriptions. Also make sure you carry an ample supply of any over-the-counter medications you may need along the way. Depending on where you’re moving, you may want health certificates, immunization information, and other documents for yourself, your family, and your pets and plants. So keep them handy.

Moving Tips

Check with ongoing medical care givers, such as orthodontist or obstetrician, about services for which you have pre-paid. You may be able to get a refund or transfer some credit to a new practitioner.

If you are driving more than a couple of hours with children, take games, books, personal radios or tape or CD players. Also take writing paper, stamps, and envelopes so children can write notes to friends they are leaving.

Give each child a small box or bag and let them take whatever they want in the container. For an overnight or longer trip, pack all toiletries and clothing you will need, plus a little extra just to be safe. Include a notebook that your child can use to write about the trip, or just scribble.
