One Week to Moving Day
  • If you are moving yourself, finish up the packing.

  • Take animals to vet for immunizations, if necessary.

  • Drain power equipment of oil and gas.

  • Drain all water hoses.

  • Check and close your safety deposit box.

  • Transfer your bank accounts.

  • Settle any bills with local businesses.

  • Confirm any travel reservations.

Moving Tips

Remember to use toll-free numbers to make travel reservations at motels or hotels along your travel route. Be sure to ask for the best rate. Senior citizen rate? Business rate? Pitiful-me rate?

  • If using movers, stand by to answer questions while movers pack your belongings.

  • Disconnect and prepare major appliances for move.

  • Set aside anything that will travel in your car so that it will not be loaded on the truck.

  • Pack a box of items that will be needed first at the new house.

  • Get cash or travelers checks for the trip and to pay the movers.

Moving Problems

Be ready to pay the mover for your shipment as agreed, often in cash upon delivery. If you don't, the shipper can hold your shipment and charge storage.

Day before Moving Day:

  • Confirm arrival time of your moving van.

  • If moving yourself, dismantle beds and other large furniture as needed.

  • Defrost refrigerator and freezer, and then prop the doors open.

  • Have your landlord or building superintendent look at your place to determine if some or all of the cleaning deposit can be refunded.
