Calling a few moving agents will net you a rough estimate of the price of your move or an appointment for someone to come out and make a written estimate. Check the phonebook’s yellow pages under “Movers.”
Your moving agent will estimate the space required in the van and the net weight of everything you’re moving. These figures will then be multiplied by the mileage to come up with your estimated cost. The price of packing materials (boxes, crates) and services (packing, unpacking, appliance preparation) will also be added. Insurance costs are extra.
If you have access to the Internet, go online and search for moving companies and truck rental companies. Many have Web sites with information you can download, and some offer online assistance and cost estimates.
